wellbeing with sally; when new years' resolutions don't go to plan

Hi all,

It could well be that time of year when the January blues have hit and a big part of that is because the New Year’s resolutions haven’t worked out, maybe they never even took off!

Firstly, don’t worry! You are not alone. In fact, most people give up on their New Years resolutions by the end of January. Only 1% make the end of the year!

In this post are some reasons why and some pointers for how we can make some more positive intentions and feel good.

why do resolutions fail?

  1. Unrealistic goals have been set – these may well be goals that have been set way too high and therefore very hard to obtain in the immediate future.

  2. Not enough time in the day – There simply isn’t the time and space in the day to achieve such big things in such a small amount of time that is left to spare for things like our goals.

  3. Not having the confidence/belief in the process our ourselves.

  4. Not having enough money – things like gyms and healthy eating can be expensive. January is a poor financial month for many people, so this can be a factor.

Instead of new years' resolutions, it can be better for your wellbeing to set some more general intentions for the year ahead that are based on your goals. Here are some tips and suggested intentions to help you with this approach:

  1. Keep future goal setting realistic and relevant to your life right now.

  2. Try to eat more vegetables and fruit, and remember, any improvement is some improvement.

  3. Get enough relaxation time in for yourself and carve out some ‘me’ time.

  4. Take an online course that is of interest to you.

  5. Spend quality time with family and loved ones.

  6. Learn to say ‘no’… and don’t feel guilty.

  7. Arrange a trip to somewhere you haven’t been before.

  8. Think about going on a staycation and discover lovely things near your home.

  9. Look into a topic that you know little or nothing about.

  10. Embrace and celebrate any flaws or imperfections. And remember, you either win or learn… no fails!

Even just trying out one or two of these things and/or having a think about them can help for a positive mindset. With that in mind, you’re already smashing life and doing great!

Take care of yourselves,

Sally
