April is here, and with it Stress Awareness Month! This month is a time to bring attention to the harmful effects stress can have on our health, relationships and quality of life. It’s a reminder that managing stress is critical to our wellbeing.

Stress is inevitable, but we are completely in control of how we deal with it. This month is the ideal occasion to lean into some stress management strategies like, breathing, relaxing, and recalibrating. So, get yourself a cup of tea or coffee - it’s time to explore some methods of confronting stress during this time.

stress-busting tips for stress awareness month

  1. Try Some Deep Breathing. Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4. Whereas just doing this for a minute or two can settle your heart rate down and send you back to a place of calm. Give it a try next time you’re overwhelmed. You will be stunned at how powerful it is!

  2. Get Walking and Get Moving. Physical activity is a killer stress-buster. From a short walk around the block to a quick jog to some gentle stretching, when you move your body, it releases endorphins (those magical happiness chemicals!). Your mind will thank you!

  3. Dance Like No One’s Watching! Put on your favourite music, turn it up as loud as it can go and let your body move however it wants to.

  4. Be Creative (Perfection Is Not Required). Stress has a way of squeezing creativity out of us. But were you aware creative pursuits may relieve stress by providing us a diversion? You don’t have to be an artist or a musician — doodle, paint, knit, write a poem, even build a fort (hey, it’s fun, and stress-relieving).

  5. Practice Gratitude (Yes, I Mean It!) When stress hits, it’s so easy to notice everything going wrong. But a shift in mindset can go a long way. Write stuff down if it helps.

  6. Laugh (It’s the Best Medicine). One of the fastest ways to lower stress and improve your mood is to laugh. Watch a funny video, contact a friend who always makes you chuckle or scroll through an Instagram account made up of memes. Take the stress away with a little therapy called laughter!

  7. Treat Yourself to a DIY Spa Moment. Self-care isn’t just a buzzword: It’s a necessity for relieving stress. So bring in candles, essential oils, and calming music to create a soothing environment at home. Take a hot, soothing bath, put on a face mask, or put your feet up and chill. It’s about treating yourself and allowing your body and mind some TLC. And relax!

  8. Talk It Out. Sometimes, talking it out is the best way to reduce stress. Get a friend, family member or even a professional, and complain about what’s bothering you. Sometimes saying the words out loud can make everything seem more manageable. Also, you just never know — your chat may come armed with some good advice, a hug or simply a much-needed laugh.

So, let’s make this April the beginning of a life with less stress! Happy Stress Awareness Month! You've got this!!!

Take care, Sally
