asphaleia celebrates black history month in october

Last month here in England we celebrated Black History Month. It is an annual month of recognition and celebration of Black experiences and achievements throughout British history as well as in the present day.

Students in our OnTrack classes looked at Black History Month in some of their lessons and thought about black celebrities that they admire. One student made a poster, which went up on the wall, celebrating one of his favourite music artists.

Higher level ESOL students took the opportunity to take a look at a Black History Month magazine, featuring celebrated UK black celebrities including Manchester United footballer and free school meals campaigner Marcus Rashford and multi-champion Formula 1 Grand Prix racing driver and campaigner Lewis Hamilton.

Our second young people's e-bulletin went out this week and it's theme was Black History Month and included a thought-provoking video from TEDx Youth and a quiz with a prize for the person who sends back the most correct answers.
